Character Design ProcessThere’s always a method to my madness when creating characters.I start by collecting reference photos. These help shape the character’s style and personality. If I want cool shoes, I’ll study tons of sneaker designs. For hair, I focus on texture and shape—especially for Black characters, since hair is a big part of identity.Once I have the overall look, I create a character turnaround. This shows the character from multiple angles. It’s not just about the front view. The character needs to feel real and consistent from every perspective. That’s when the character truly starts to come to life.

Book Page Layout & PlanOnce my character is created, I move on to planning the layout of the book. Most picture books follow a standard 32-page format, so I keep that structure in mind from the start.I begin by sketching out a rough idea of how each page—or spread—might look. Some illustrations stretch across two pages, while others are just one image per page. It all depends on the pacing and mood of the story. To map it out, I create quick thumbnail sketches. These help me figure out how the story flows, where key moments happen, and how to balance text and visuals. This planning stage gives me a clear rhythm to follow and sets the foundation for the entire book.

Color Theory & Body LanguageColor brings a character to life. I use it to show mood and personality.Clothing choices also help. Outfits say a lot about who a character is.Body language matters just as much. Movement shows emotion.I focus on posture, gestures, and how the body reacts.References help. It’s hard to guess how a body moves—especially in strange poses. You can’t always imagine it. That’s why visuals are key.

Send to Print!Once everything is finished, I proofread and check every detail—colors, pages, and illustrations. When it all looks right, I send the book to print. Then it’s ready to share and showcase all the work that went into bringing it to life.

Recharge Time was the 1st book I've illustrated and written. It was an fun and intense process. The idea came about when I was a young child that I used to be overwhelmed with things going around me. I would sometimes need a moment to myself just to relax and recharge.

Henry's Morning Routine was the 2nd book I've illustrated and written. This was such a fun one for me is because owls are my favorite animal. This story was created to showcase how important the need for routine is. From the structure it gives you as an adult or a young child everyone needs balance in life.

You Got Spots? So Do I! is my latest book that I've published. This book was created for those that have a hard time loving their skin even if it looks a little different from everyone else. This book talks of various types of skin conditions that young children deal with now and even in adult life. For me as a person that deals with skin condition such as eczema, I wanted to see people that looked like me. So, I created that character spots and all.
